In addition, I’m collecting everything I learn about overcoming phone and social media addiction in the Knowledge Base. The goal is to create a clear, organised overview of useful insights from books, podcasts, and other valuable sources, so that you don’t have to start from scratch.
For me, the answer is clear. I hate my phone, not because it isn’t fun, but because it’s too fun. What I hate most is that almost every app is designed to fight for your attention. Social media doesn’t make money by improving your life but it makes money by keeping you online for as long as possible. Their incentives are not aligned with yours — and that matters more than we like to admit.
The most difficult part is that some apps are genuinely useful. Maps, Whatsapp, 2FA, work or study related apps and much more useful applications. This makes it hard or impossible to switch to a dumb phone. Just like me, most people are stuck between two sides: aware of the problem, but slowly drifting back to old habits.
If you recognise yourself in this, there is hope. Being aware of the problem is already a big step. From there, progress comes from persistence. As long as you keep trying with the right mindset, finding a healthy balance is possible.
For me, one shift in mindset made the biggest difference. This journey isn’t about never using your phone, never watching videos, or deleting every app. It’s about self-control and what you do after you slip up. Being honest with yourself, noticing when you drift off track, and returning quickly matters far more than avoiding mistakes altogether.
So, I invite you to do the same. Feel free too look around, and see what worked for me. If you feel inspired, you can even try yourself. If it helps, you can crease a private profile to keep track of your progress, stay honest to yourself and reflect. And if you ever feel ready, you can choose to make your profile public. The goal is not to have the perfect profile, but a honest one.
That is how we can build a real community, where we can learn from and with each other.
